At age 14, when the equine bug had bit me as it does so many young girls, my military family moved to a base that included a saddle club and my parents bought me a horse. Pride was a blue roan Tennessee Walking Horse, three years old and only green broke. I knew nothing about horse training, so though I learned a lot during my ownership, I never got to a level of riding or "horse sense" that I would have with an older, trained, more experienced mount.
My personal horse days ended when we moved to our next duty station, and I didn't return to the field for forty years. I bought a house in a community allows horses, and in less than a year I had two horses grazing in my pasture. Chuy, a smart paint, and Travis, a gentle thoroughbred, are teenagers in terms of horse lifespan-both seven years old. Both are saddle broke and used to being ridden, so I have started my second round of horse ownership much farther along the path to mastery than I did the first time.
In spite of my previous experience, I have started all over again. I admit to a bit of surprise about this, having assumed that I would have retained a fair amount about having horses in spite of the number of years that have gone by. Kind of like riding a bicycle, I figured that it would all come back to me. But actually, not so much. But I'm making great progress, mainly because I am taking specific actions to steadily improve my horse knowledge.
- I have created a group of advisors, from my farrier to professional trainers to fellow horse-owning neighbors, and I don't hesitate to ask them even the most basic questions.
- I participate in several online forums that center on horse ownership. There is a treasure trove of information on these sites that has proven invaluable to me.
- I have purchased a library of DVDs that present a wide variety of professional trainers talking about and demonstrating an equally wide variety of skills and practices needed for safe, responsible, and fun horsemanship.
- I have attended local clinics with equine experts to see what I've read about and watched on video in real time, and to meet other owners in my area.
All this has made a big difference. The relationship with my two "teenagers" improves daily, and I have a much better understanding of a horse's view of the world than I did the first time around. I'm also very much the alpha mare in the herd, and they respect my position. I'm looking forward to many years of horse happiness!

Equestrian Vaulting $78.07 Equestrian vaulting is most often described as gymnastics and dance on horseback, and like these disciplines, it is an art and not a competitive sport. It is open to males and females. It is one of ten competitive equestrian events recognized by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports, along with: dressage, combined driving, endurance riding, eventing, horseball, paraequestrian, reining, and show jumping, and tent pegging. Therapeutic or Interactive Vaulting is also used as form of treatment for children and adults who may have balance, attention, gross motor skill, or social deficits. Vaulting has many enthusiasts worldwide, but particularly in Germany, where it is often practiced as part of basic equestrian training. The German vaulting squads are highly ranked and very competitive on the world stage. Vaulting is also especially well established in France (where it is known as Voltige), Sweden, the UK, and the Netherlands. Enthusiasm for the sport is also growing in Brazil, Australia, and in the United States. American vaulters have been successful competing internationally and the US has produced several world champions and highly ranked vaulting teams.
